AtAP Brainstorming as of 9/27/20

     This week we began our work on the Enlightenment, and wrote our first Critical Analysis practice. After completing these assignments, I think that I have made some very general decisions about my final project. Looking over the Content section of the Project Overview, I think that I may choose to organize my content through form, specifically paintings. I found it interesting to write a critical analysis on a painting this week, as it is something I have never tried. In high school we always wrote about literature, so I hope that, unless I find another form that I enjoy more, I can continue to focus on paintings in the future. I also found that Neoclassicism was very applicable to current times, as it spawned from such a revolutionary era. I think that I will try to use this in my project, and may focus into other works designed to inspire the public, or to express a point.

    This sounds like a solid idea, especially as you can build off of your work each week from these historical periods before moving into a more modern focus. While you'll certainly find many differences between older and contemporary painting, the elements used to analyze them will be the same and I also believe you'll find many common themes that will give this project a sense of cohesion, too!

Modernism in a Physical Display

Guggenheim Museum by Frank Lloyd Wright, 1959; Source: Trendir     The above work, the Guggenheim Museum, effectively displays the values of Modernism while appealing to a wider audience, all through design and aesthetic characteristics, which brings about ideas of today's fluid working environment. The Guggenheim's tiered, circular upper portion serves two purposes. The first provides a spiraling interior used to display artwork in a way which allows the audience to flow through the work in a sequence. The second is to emphasize the freedom within Modernism. The building rejects the square-cornered boundaries of the surrounding city, instead focusing on dynamic curves which invite viewers to explore freedom of expression. The museum houses works of art, while it's own exterior is a Modernist work, creating a feeling of interest and artisanship within onlookers.       The Enlightenment was a revolutionary cultural movement which serves as a basis for much of modern science, philosophy and society. It championed reason and renounced the feudalist ways of the past, paving the way for the average citizen in society. Out of the Enlightenment emerged the first glimpses of equality among people.
