Modernism in a Physical Display

The above work, the Guggenheim Museum, effectively displays the values of Modernism while appealing to a wider audience, all through design and aesthetic characteristics, which brings about ideas of today's fluid working environment. The Guggenheim's tiered, circular upper portion serves two purposes. The first provides a spiraling interior used to display artwork in a way which allows the audience to flow through the work in a sequence. The second is to emphasize the freedom within Modernism. The building rejects the square-cornered boundaries of the surrounding city, instead focusing on dynamic curves which invite viewers to explore freedom of expression. The museum houses works of art, while it's own exterior is a Modernist work, creating a feeling of interest and artisanship within onlookers. The fluidness of the buildings exterior and the purpose-built interior lead to contemporary ideas of the importance of workspaces. No longer are modern workers looking for a cubicle within a large cookie-cutter building. Newer offices are open concept, allowing for ease of work flow, a feeling of togetherness and a more fluid office dynamic. These ideas stem from Modernism: freedom of expression, rejection of boundaries and the evocation of emotion through abstract ideas.
Hey Mike,
ReplyDeleteIt was very interesting that you did your critical analysis on a sixty year old building that looks like it was built within the last few years. The purpose of the structure for the building reminds me of Google Headquarters where they implore a casual free environment in their office spaces to help increase productivity. Abstraction and rejection of boundaries through traditional rectangle buildings are some of the best things to come from the Modernism period.
Best,

Hi Mike, I find this interesting and I think it is definitely a good progressive way about our society and community. Working in a cubicle and the same old can be actually kind of deteriorating to mental health. Places like google have open floor plans and work on making sure their employees have a good work environment.
ReplyDeleteHey Mike, I think it's really interesting how the building contains works of art, while being a work of art itself. I also completely agree with you on how ideas of modernism, such as freedom of expression, align with how newer offices are structuring themselves. Having ideas being free-flowing in work place, instead of stuck in their cubicle, makes it easier for those ideas to build off of each other and create something even better, along with making everyone's experience more enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteHi Mike, I thought it was interesting that you brought up how the building you picked is a work of art and how it relates too modernism. One thing I liked was that you went into detail about how the building was built and how it is shaped.
